Based on data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Vedomosti reported that the only product from the borscht set (onions, beets, cabbage, potatoes and carrots) that increased in price last year was onions.
Since last February, the price of onions in the wholesale sector has increased by 28.7% to 19.3 rubles per kilogram. At the same time, the price of other products fell: the price of cabbage was 58.6% (12.7 rubles per kilogram), potatoes – 37.3% (17.2 rubles), beets – 28.8% (15.8 rubles), carrots – 20.4% (up to 18.8 rubles).
The Ministry of Agriculture attributes the increase in onion prices to the ban on exports to Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan). Vegetables stored in unheated warehouses deteriorated due to January frosts, so to avoid shortages, authorities suspended the export of onions to neighboring countries, including Russia.
