Effective from 2024 the job allowance of metropolitan mayors and mayors of municipalities in ordinary statute regions will be aligned with the overall economic treatment of the regions’ presidents
In a few months, the permanent salary increase for mayors will take effect, as decided in the 2022 budget law of the Draghi government. Especially for metropolitan mayors, a 100 percent emolument increase is expected from January next year (equal to 13,800 euros gross per month); 80 percent for the mayors of the regional main municipalities and for the mayors of the provincial main municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants (equal to 11,040 euros gross per month); 70 percent for the mayors of provincial main municipalities with a population of up to 100,000 inhabitants (equal to 9,660 euros gross per month) and 45 percent for the mayors of municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants (equal to 6,210 euros gross per month).
The salary of the mayors of metropolitan cities
As a result of the same rule, mayors’ salaries have already increased in 2022 and 2023. But it is next year that the increases will come into effect. The mayors of the metropolises will earn 13,800 gross per month, or 6,800 more than in 2021. In the case of the first citizens of Rome and Milan, the salary will be doubled, Il Messaggero explains. In 2021, the allowance will be 7 thousand euros gross per month. The gross monthly salary of the mayor of a metropolis therefore grew to 10,070 euros gross in 2022. It reached 11,629 in 2023. Now the new increase of another 2,200 euros in 2024.
The salaries of the other mayors
It is also good for the first citizens of the capitals, where a mayor received a gross amount of 5,205 euros until two years ago. From January he will receive 11,040 euros gross per month. In Viterbo, however, it goes from 4,508 to 9,660 euros, as Il Messaggero writes. Just like in Rieti, which has less than 50 thousand inhabitants. In municipalities with 30 to 50 thousand inhabitants, mayors contribute 1,700 euros more per month. That is 4,830 euros instead of 3,100.
