The sources said that, based on the results of the preliminary assessment, the European Union concluded that paying for Russian gas in rubles is a violation of the sanctions regime. The Italian government is waiting for Brussels’ legal review to be over before taking any action.

“If the European Union concludes that this will violate sanctions, Italy will refuse to comply with the new payment terms for gas demanded by Moscow,” the publication said.
