A new EU economic restraint package for Russia targets the energy sector. The Wall Street Journal, citing its sources, writes that EU countries will refuse to import oil from Russia for six months.

Earlier, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that the sanctions would affect the banking sector and oil imports from Russia. Some Russian credit institutions are expected to be disconnected from the SWIFT payment system.

The centerpiece of the package is the bloc’s proposal that member states stop importing Russian crude oil for six months and not buy any more Russian oil products until the end of this year.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić criticized the West’s sanctions policy towards Russia. According to him, such actions would lead to a final severance of relations with Moscow, contrary to Belgrade’s national interests.
