“Genome Data Infrastructure” (Gdi), a project funded by the European Commission with €40 million, aimed at developing a new digital infrastructure, efficient and sustainable, for cross-referencing the genome and clinical data of more than one million people and thus winning the great challenge of precision medicine. The ultimate goal is to be able to translate genomic research into clinical practice, to optimize diagnoses and to pave the way for increasingly personalized treatments.

Involved 23 countries

The European project is part of the “Digital Europe” program and is coordinated by Elixir, the European research infrastructure for life sciences and bioinformatics, whose National Research Council (Cnr) coordinates the Italian node.
Gdi sees the participation of 23 countries, including Italy, with the support of the Ministries of University and Research and Health.
In addition to the National Research Council, the Italian partnership also includes the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan and the Italian Institute of Technology (Iit).

Possible applications

“The Gdi project offers our country an extraordinary opportunity to systematize scientific excellence in genomic research in the national health system which, although characterized by first-class clinical realities, also at the international level, is however very fragmented, also due to its organization on regional base,” reported Graziano Pesole (Cnr-Ibiom), coordinator of the National Elixir Node. “The digital infrastructure we want to develop, when fully operational, will allow the patient’s genetic information to be included in the electronic medical record and shared in a controlled manner, respecting European legislation on the protection of individual data is respected, paving the way for significant prospects for improvement and growth in quality and efficiency for many services provided by our healthcare system,” he added.
