The causes of Bruce Lee’s death are still a matter of debate, as there is no absolute certainty about what happened on the night of July 20, 1973 in Hong Kong, when the martial arts legend died under mysterious circumstances at the age of only 32 . . However, a study published in the December issue of the Clinical Kidney Journal claims to have solved the whodunit.

The investigation, conducted by a Spanish team specializing in kidney problems, and relaunched in the US media, indicates that Lee may have died “from a specific form of kidney dysfunction, i.e. the inability to expel sufficient water”. The researchers say the cause could be hyponatremia, or an “abnormally” low level of sodium in the blood, a condition that can develop when there is too much water in the body. In fact, the Mayo Clinic, a well-known non-profit medical research and practice organization based in Rochester (Minnesota), Jacksonville (Florida), and Phoenix (Arizona), explained that sodium, as an electrolyte, helps regulate the amount of water that surrounds the cells, is inside. Nearly 50 years ago, however, doctors ruled that cerebral edema was the cause of death.

“We hypothesize that Bruce Lee died of a specific form of renal dysfunction: the inability to excrete enough water to maintain homeostasis. This can lead to hyponatremia, cerebral edema, and death within hours if excessive water intake is not accompanied by water excretion .” the fluid in the urine. The fact that we are 60% water does not protect us from the life-threatening consequences of drinking water faster than our kidneys can excrete it,” the researchers explain in the study. Shannon Lee, the daughter of Bruce Lee, published recently published a book about her father’s life and memories in order to preserve his artistic and human legacy entitled ‘Be water, my friend’.
