Long Covid, a highly disabling type of syndrome that occurs several weeks after infection, can show different symptoms in teens and children after a certain period of time, according to a new study published in “The Lancet Regional Health – Europe,” conducted by scientists at University College London. after infection. The team of researchers, as part of the ‘Children and young people with Lung Covid (CLoCk)’ project, involved 5,086 children aged between 11 and 17 to collect data on the symptoms that manifested during the infection and over the course of working hours and information about their health 12 months after the molecular test for Covid-19. The group was led by Terence Stephenson and Snehal Pinto Pereira.
What the research says
Of the 5,086 children involved, 2,909 tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. As observed by the researchers, the symptoms initially reported changed over the year: in particular, some new manifestations were added to existing ones, while others decreased. Among the most common ones studied were fatigue, insomnia, loss of smell and headache, anxiety, depression and brain fog.
Conclusions
The researchers also noted that between 6 and 12 months after a positive test, although most symptoms tended to diminish, some patients complained of shortness of breath, onset of fatigue, poor quality of life, poor well-being and fatigue. In particular, shortness of breath and fatigue were the most common symptoms. “Our study suggests the importance of repeated measures in the same individuals over time to track changes in symptom manifestations,” said Pereira.
