China’s former leader, Jiang Zemin, who ruled the country from the late 80s to the new millennium, died Wednesday at the age of 96, Xinhua news agency reported.

Jiang came to power after the Tiananmen massacre and led China, which has emerged as one of the key players on the global stage.

“Jiang Zemin passed away at 12:13 am on November 30, 2022 in Shanghai of leukemia and multiple organ failure,” reports “Xinhua”.

China was still in the early stages of economic modernization when Jiang replaced Deng Xiaoping as leader in 1989.

By the time Jiang left the presidency in 2003, China was already a member of the World Trade Organization, had won the right to host the 2008 Olympic Games, and had advanced significantly towards superpower status.

Analysts say Jiang and his group, known as the “Shanghai Clique”, continued to exert influence over state politics long after leaving high office.

In this sun, Jiang was survived by his wife, Wang Yepin, and their two sons.
