Gregg Popovich, the highest-paid coach in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA), made an ironic comment about modern basketball, which is increasingly dominated by long shots.

Popovich, 73, has won more than 1,300 victories in his NBA coaching career and won five championships with the San Antonio “Spurs” in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014.

In the NBA this season, teams average between 30 and 40 long-range shots per game. The leader is Golden State “Warriors” with 43.3 long-range shots, but the Chicago “Bulls” attack the least often from long range (28.7 three-pointers average).

Just 10 years ago, NBA teams used long shots much less frequently. In the 2012/13 2018 season, the leaders were the New York “Knicks” and Houston “Rockets”, who averaged 28.9 long shots per game.

“Of course, it’s much harder to play defense nowadays because now many players can shoot threes. The amount is big, it has increased very quickly. So people will score, the average performance will increase.” said Popovic.

The “Spurs” team led by Popovich are in the process of rebuilding the roster and currently occupy the penultimate place in the Western Conference with 13 wins and 28 losses.
