It is planned to watch the semi-final and final matches of the world hockey championship held in Riga, open to the public.

The Riga City Council Department of External Communications announced that the municipality, in cooperation with the organizers of the championship, will move the official fan zone of the championship from “Arenas Rīga” to Doma Square and Esplanade. Events will start at 13:00 on Saturday and at 14:00 on Sunday.

Dome Square will be redesigned and adapted to watch live matches to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, like the big screen on the Esplanade.

The cars of “Škoda”, the official supporter of the World Hockey Championship, will be exhibited at the venues and souvenirs of the championship will be on sale.

Until yesterday, the official and only fan zone was Arena Rīga, where both Riga residents and the city’s guests had the opportunity to watch matches together on big screens and enjoy a real hockey atmosphere. From now on, the fan zone will no longer exist in the specified location.

The mayor of the capital, Mārtiņš Staķis (PP), reports on the microblogging site “Twitter” that Riga’s semi-final and final matches in Doma Square and Esplanade will be watched live, in close cooperation with the organizers of the championship.

Dome Square has already been adapted to watch the matches live, while the big screen will be placed on the Esplanade.

“Hockey stays in town!” It emphasizes stakis.

Riga City Council reported that moving the supporters area means additional cost, as the LED screen of the Dome Square will be equipped with sound and the area will be adapted to the place where the match can be watched. On the other hand, a screen will be placed on the Esplanade and, similar to the Dome Square, the area will be adapted to view live hockey broadcasts.

Costs are currently still being calculated and a specific amount has not been disclosed.

Some elements of the World Hockey Championship that were previously in the urban environment will be migrated and new design locations will not be created. The municipality of Riga will organize live viewing events in cooperation with the organizers of the championship, so some of the equipment will be from them.

Riga City Council has allocated € 570,000 for the World Hockey Championship in the capital as co-financing and € 130,000 for municipal structural units.

Latvia men’s hockey team advanced to the semi-finals for the first time in its history, defeating the Swedish national team in the quarterfinals of the world championship held in Riga on Thursday.

Latvia celebrated the victory with 3:1 (1:0, 0:1, 2:0).

The Latvian national team’s semi-final match will be played against Canadian ice hockey players in Tampere on Saturday.

The World Championships, co-hosted by the Finnish city of Tampere and Riga, will be held from 12 to 28 May.
