Latvia’s best tennis player, Aļona Ostapenko, does not hide that she is proud of the success of the Latvian hockey team at the world championship.
The Latvian national hockey team won a world championship medal for the first time in its history, beating the USA team 4:3 in extra time in the minor final in Tampere on Sunday. The best achievement of Latvian hockey so far.
At the press conference of the prestigious “Grand Slam” tennis tournament “French Open”, Ostapenko was asked about the achievements of the Latvian hockey team.
“Is it a new national holiday? Of course I’m really proud of our players. They’re great. I have many friends in the team. I went to the match against the Swiss national team when I was at home. It was unique,” said Ostapenko.
For the Latvian national team, the match with Switzerland was decisive for entering the playoffs. In this match, Latvia won 4:3 in extra time and advanced to the quarter-finals.
“I’m really happy for the hockey players. They worked hard, they’re beautiful guys. Our country should be proud of what they’ve achieved, we’re a small country but we’ve accomplished a lot. The hockey players have done an excellent job.” ,” said Ostapenko.
On Wednesday, Ostapenko will face American Peyton Stearns, who is ranked 69th in the WTA, in the second round of the French Open Championship.
