Max Verstappen captured pole position in the Spanish Grand Prix Formula 1 with his Red Bull. Tomorrow, Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari will start behind the world champion on the Barcelona circuit. Lando Norris’ McLaren was third. Bad Charles Leclerc, who was already out of qualifying in Q1 and will start from 19th place. The race at the Montmelò circuit, the seventh round of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship, is scheduled for Sunday 4 June at 3 p.m. (live on Sky).

The starting grid

For Verstappen it is the fourth pole position of this season. Behind him, as said, Sainz and Norris will start. Fourth grid position for Pierre Gasly’s Alpine Renault, fifth for Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes, sixth for Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin. Seventh ahead of Estaben Ocon’s Alpine Renault, ahead of Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas and Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin. Oscar Piastri’s other McLaren rounds out the top ten, while Sergio Perez’s Red Bull is only eleventh on the grid. Followed by George Russell (Mercedes), Guanyu Zhou (Alfa Romeo), Nyck de Vries (AlphaTauri), Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri), Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo), Kevin Magnussen (Haas), Alexander Albon (Williams), Charles Leclerc ( Ferrari) and Logan Sargeant (Williams).

Bad Leclerc, 19th

Charles Leclerc will therefore start from the penultimate place on the grid. It was a disastrous first moto for his Ferrari. In fact, the Monegasque driver couldn’t do better than a 19th fastest time and already retired in Q1. The driver complained to the pit crew about the “ungritability” of his Ferrari. “There was something on the right rear that wasn’t right. We have to look at the data before commenting. There was something weird, the feeling was completely different from the rest of the year. Something was definitely not right,” he commented directly.

Verstappen and Sainz’s comments

Satisfied, however, Verstappen. “The car felt really good. Qualifying was difficult at the beginning because it had rained, but after the track dried up in Q3 the car was on track. The driving was really fun. I like coming to Barcelona: I like it fans, I love this circuit and have so many good memories here. I hope I can add another one tomorrow,” said the Red Bull driver. Positive qualifications also for Sainz. “I think I rode really well. There’s always a tenth here and there, but I really pushed, gave everything. I pushed hard, we were all in the same group. Second place was the best possible today result,” said the Ferrari driver. And again: “We were all close to it, we needed a good lap. Going through even Q1 and Q2 without any problems was not easy or obvious. Going only one lap with only one set in Q3 meant making this one from the more complicated qualifying sessions. “But we managed to do everything right and we are in the best possible position for tomorrow’s race. Now we can concentrate on trying to get on the podium. Room for improvement? I was very good today.”
