US Attorney General Merrick Garland deepens the investigation into the president’s son ahead of the 2024 election by appointing a special attorney in the Hunter Biden case.
Garland announced that the president has appointed Delaware attorney David Weiss as special counsel to investigate his son’s financial and business dealings.
The US attorney general said on Tuesday that Weiss had told him that “in his view, the investigation had reached a stage where he should continue to serve as special counsel and he would like to be appointed to that position.”
“After considering his request and the unusual circumstances surrounding this case, I have come to the conclusion that it is in the public interest to appoint him as special counsel,” said Garland.
For the normally cautious Garland, it’s an important step in the middle of two Justice Department investigations into former President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Republicans in the US House of Representatives launched their own investigations into Hunter Biden’s deals.
In July, a US judge refused to accept a plea deal that could resolve Hunter Biden’s charges of tax evasion and illegal weapons possession.
