Musk has unveiled ‘Optimus’, prototype humanoid robot

Less than $20,000 for the robot to be tested first at Tesla’s factories. The goal is to have it on the market within five years and to produce it in millions of pieces

On Tesla’s AI Day, Elon Musk announced the first result of robotics research activities. The California entrepreneur last year unveiled the project to build a humanoid robot known as Optimus or Tesla Bot: a year later, a first prototype arrived, which Musk defined as “a raw development robot”. It should be on the market within five years and cost about twenty thousand dollars. During the presentation, the vending machine also showed some hand movements and walked on the stage of the Palo Alto theater, the location of the event. For now, the device is therefore in the very early stages of development, behind the results of other companies, including in the United States.

Designed to “help millions of people”

Musk used the robot to interest attendees, including many influencers, in its achievements in developing artificial intelligence technologies needed to improve autonomous driving systems. This was stated by Musk himself, who admitted to organizing the AI day “to convince some of the most talented people in the world to join Tesla and help make it a reality”. The announcement was enriched with noble declarations of intent, in fact the robot is designed to “help millions of people” and contribute to “a future of abundance, where there is no poverty and people can have what they want and services”.
