nubia Pad 3D, the tablet with a three-dimensional screen from ZTE

Must read

We tested the innovative product brought to market by the Chinese multinational in collaboration with Leia, a world leader in the development of 3D AI technologies. Allows you to study, work, play with three-dimensional content (which gives the effect of coming out of the screen) without having to wear annoying glasses

Working on 3D animations, playing with characters that come to life and “leave the screen”, study on 3D models and make next generation video calls. All without glasses or other aids. It’s not science fiction, but it’s the new nubia Pad 3D technology, the world’s first 3D AI tablet marketed by the Chinese company ZTE thanks to a collaboration with Leia, a world leader in the development of these technologies. Presented at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, we had the opportunity to try out all the features for over a month, which is how it went (spoiler: we loved it).

The 3D vision

At a glance, the new nubia Pad 3D looks like a normal tablet with an Android operating system on which we can perform all the normal actions that we do every day: use apps, watch movies, play games, draw, read and so on . However, what sets it apart from all other tablets is the Lightfield 3D technology it is equipped with: thanks to the addition of a layer of light nanometric materials to the traditional LCD display module, it uses the principle of stereoscopic perception of the human eye , giving each of the eyes a different image, creating the illusion of depth. The effect, the first few times you use the tablet, is stunning and it almost seems as if the images on the screen come to life and “emerge” from the Pad. Pre-installed we find plenty of software made by Leia and a store – parallel to the classic Play Store – from which you can download 3D apps or games. There are apps for viewing 3D videos, for viewing photos, for tutorial videos, an app for 3D video calling, and even an app called LeiaDream that provides a generative prompt that, through artificial intelligence, can create any image we want by us . Thanks to the dual cameras on the front and back, it is also possible to capture the surrounding world in first person, again all in 3D. Too bad that in Italy we cannot use LeiaFlix, a collection of 3D movies, while another interesting app, LeiaTube, which has the task of converting any video on the Internet (such as YouTube) into 3D video, is still a bit immature .

The other features

As we mentioned, in addition to these “special” features, the tablet can be used as a traditional tablet. It has a Snapdragon 888 processor, 8 or 12 gigabytes of RAM and 128 or 256 gigabytes of storage space. The graphics performance of the 12.4-inch 2.5K IPS LCD display is very good with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The 9,070 mAh battery is excellent, so you can even work on 3D content for a whole day without running out of power. On the side of the tablet – which has a black color and a metal housing – we also find a SIM card slot. There is a fingerprint reader on the power button.

Judgment, availability, prices

nubia Pad 3D is a tablet that can be used for many aspects: studying, working with 3D models, playing games, watching educational 3D videos, doing research, keeping in touch with your family thanks to 3D video calls. The test went very well and the tablet left us extremely satisfied, especially as we tried a product with an innovative technology that was different from the others. Plus, unlike other 3D systems, this won’t give you a headache or – in our opinion – a sense of disorientation. The Lightfield 3D technology is effective and the three-dimensional animations are easy to see from most frontal angles. The suggested retail price is not low (from 1,299 euros) but in our opinion is certainly sufficient for the technical details of this product.

Pros and cons

  • Innovative technology that allows you to enjoy 3D content without glasses
  • Very complete and continuously updated 3D software equipment

  • LeiaFlix app (to watch movies) not available in Italy
  • LeiaTube app (which converts 2D content on the web into 3D) is still immature
