In Afghanistan, 12 people, including three women, were publicly flogged in front of thousands of spectators for “moral crimes”.
The beating occurred at a football stadium in the state of Lougar. It is believed that this is the second time the Taliban has carried out such a public beating in a month.
A Taliban spokesman told the BBC that according to the Taliban, those subjected to this brutal punishment are guilty of “moral crimes”, including adultery, theft and same-sex relationships.
When the Taliban seized power in August last year, it promised a more moderate rule than its first rule from 1996 to 2001. However, these penalties show the opposite.
The Taliban regime seeks international recognition and humanitarian aid, which was suspended after it came to power, but gradually imposes more stringent restrictions on rights and freedoms.
Especially in the last 15 months, women’s rights have been severely restricted and increasingly prevented from participating in public life. Most of the women lost their jobs in public institutions, were forbidden to travel without a man with them, and were forced to cover up outside the home.
This month, the Taliban decided that women should not be allowed in parks, amusement parks, gyms and public baths.
A week ago, Afghanistan’s supreme supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, instructed judges to fully comply with Islamic law for certain crimes, which include public executions, stoning, mutilation and flogging.
A Taliban spokesman in Lougar province told the BBC that all three women were released after being beaten, and several men were jailed.
Men and women were hit with a sledgehammer between 21 and 39. Another Taliban official explained that the maximum number of whips that can be given to a person is 39.
Last week, 19 people were publicly flogged in Tahar province.
