Latvian basketball player Rolands Šmits scored seven points on Thursday, helping Kaunas “Žalgiris” team beat “Real” Madrid in the 14th round of the ULEB Euroleague.
The match played in Kaunas ended in favor of the home team at 81:72 (18:21, 19:14, 19:20, 25:17).
Valters Tavares became the richest player of all time in the Euroleague with blocked shots in this match for Madrid. He made four saves and currently stops 321 shots in the EuroLeague, four more than Bryant Dunston of Anadolu Efes Istanbul.
Tavares also elbowed Schmidt in the face with less than two minutes left in regular time, which resulted in an unsportsmanlike comment, but ended the game early. However, the team’s head coach, Kazis Maksvītis, admitted that the post-match blow would probably not have any consequences.
The Latvian basketball player spent 23 minutes and 48 seconds on the court in this match, making two-fifths one of the two-pointers and one of the three-pointers during that time. The Valmierie native also took five rebounds, blocked a shot, fouled twice, caused a foul and amassed five PPVs.
Keenen Evans stood out with 20 points, 5 turnovers and 7 fouls for Kaunas team, Edgars Ulanov 19, Tyler Kavanaugh 15, Arn Butkevic 10 points and 7 rebounds.
Gianan Moussa was Madrid’s top scorer with 22 points, while Mario Hezonja scored 17. Tavares produced 8 points and 7 rebounds in the game.
“Zalgiris” is in ninth place in the tournament table with seven victories in 14 matches, while “Real” is in fifth place with nine successes.
Also, this season, 18 teams compete in the Euroleague, where a two-round tournament is played, and the top eight teams enter the knockout tournament.
After beating Real Madrid 58:57 in the final match in Belgrade last season, Istanbul’s Anadolu Efes became the champion and won the tournament for the second time in a row.
