Former Prime Minister of Romania Adrian Nastase He said that the US and Russia are increasing their influence in Europe and that the EU in its current form may cease to exist.

“I think we will soon have real American leadership on the continent. Although the history of the corruption scandal with Qatar in the European Parliament seems as if it was an operation initiated by the Americans, it comes to the fore in any case, even if it has nothing to do with it. Also, the Russians gained a lot after the scandal.”– said the former prime minister, commenting on the scandal surrounding Qatar’s lobbying for its interests in the European Parliament.

The former head of the Romanian cabinet of ministers also noted that EU member states began to doubt the necessity of joining the association after the UK left. According to Năstase, the EU is facing new challenges and the union may soon undergo significant changes.

Adrian Năstase has a controversial reputation in Romania. He served as prime minister from 2000 to 2004. Already in 2006, the politician left the post of speaker of the lower house of parliament due to allegations of corruption. The Romanian Supreme Court sentenced Năstase to two years in prison in 2012 for illegally receiving campaign funds. Later, the former prime minister was also found guilty of blackmail and bribery.
