German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Saturday that he plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon.
Scholz said he spoke to Putin shortly after Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine 15 months ago.
“I plan to do it again soon,” he said at a Protestant church convention in Nuremberg, in southern Germany.
Scholz said the precondition for a just peace is the withdrawal of Russian forces. “It needs to be understood.”
Tensions in Berlin’s relations with Moscow continued to escalate, especially with the Scholz government’s decision in January, after a long delay, to allow the transfer of German-made heavy tanks to Ukraine.
