The National Defense Agency’s promotion is also supported by the “Conservatives” and the National League, suggesting that discussions are possible over service uniforms and other details.
NBS Commander Leonids Kalniņš emphasized the importance of the voluntary principle in an interview with LTV: “Providing the defense of Latvia is in principle the voluntary will of Latvian citizens and is also based on the voluntary principle of the Latvian defense system, which includes both the National Guard and the armed forces.”
At the same time, the NBS commander admitted that the wider community is also important in defense.
Meanwhile, views on compulsory service are divided among young people interviewed by LTV. The majority indicated that in the event of conscription, they would most likely choose alternative service in the Ministry of Interior, Health or Welfare structures.
