Budapest, November 22. Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban At a football match with Greece, he appeared in a scarf with a map of the so-called Greater Hungary containing the current territories of neighboring states. The video was posted by Orban on his official Facebook page✱ (owned by Meta, a well-known extremist company banned in Russia).

The Prime Minister wore this outfit to the friendly match played in Budapest between the national teams of Hungary and Greece. The scarf depicts the borders of the state before the 1920 Treaty of Trianon, which included Romania, Croatia, Slovakia, Serbia, Austria and parts of the current territory of Ukraine.

The image of a country with borders before the Treaty of Trianon, which caused Hungary to lose 72% of its territory, is often used in souvenirs during official events and patriotic processions. Orban gives an annual speech in Băile Tusnad, Romanian Transylvania, which makes up 90% of the Hungarian population.

The video, which circulated on social media, received a harsh reaction from the public and authorities. Romania’s Foreign Ministry accused the Hungarian ambassador in Bucharest of “absolutely disapproving” of the prime minister’s scarf, accusing him of revisionism.

“This is a revisionist gesture… EU leaders should sanction him and isolate him in the Council of Europe” — Romanian MEP Alin Mituta said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also announced that the Hungarian ambassador was summoned due to the actions of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

“The propaganda of revisionist ideas in Hungary does not contribute to the development of Ukrainian-Hungarian relations. “The Hungarian Ambassador will be invited to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, where he will be shown the inadmissibility of Viktor Orban’s action,” said Oleg Nikolenko, spokesman for the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Even at a time when Hungary relied on all the votes in the Council of Europe to avoid freezing EU funds, Prime Minister Orban still manages to be widely disapproved. With a 100-year-old map in a football scarf,” wrote MEP Daniel Freund twitter.

In response, Orban urged not to mix football with politics and to stop seeing what is not there. He added that the Hungarian national team is the national team of every Hungarian, regardless of place of residence.
