Currently, the Prisons Administration (IeVP) has no more than 400 employees, its head Dmitrijs Kalins said on TV3 “900 seconds”.

He pointed out that most of the vacancies for security guards are vacant.

Kalins stated that as one of the reasons why there is still a shortage of employees, besides the number of people in the country, people still avoid applying for open positions due to prejudice.

Kalins emphasized that we need to work to raise the prestige of the employees right now. He also noted that starting next year, the IeVP could run 24 hours a day, which could be attractive to potential employees – for example, you could save resources to get to work.

Currently, there are about 3.2 thousand people in prisons.

As reported, in October of last year General Ilona Spure stepped down as IeVP president, deciding to retire before her term expires. Kalins, head of the Olaine prison (Latvian prison hospital), was elected to the post of head of the IeVP.
