The Chihuahua state prosecutor’s office said armed bandits attacked a prison in the northern Mexican city of Juarez on Sunday, killing 14 people and allowing 24 inmates to escape.
10 of those killed are guards.
Armored vehicles were used in the attack on the prison. Security forces managed to regain control of the situation about five hours after the start of the attack.
According to local media reports, fights broke out between prisoners in the prison during the attack, inmates burned things and clashed with guards.
In the prison, where prisoners belonging to different criminal gangs and drug cartels are housed in separate blocks, there have been many riots and riots in the past, including March 2009, when 20 people were killed.
According to a report by Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission in February 2022, the prison holds more than 3,700 people, although it was designed for 3,135 inmates.
Mexican prisons are chronically overcrowded and filled with violence that has intensified in recent years as conflicts between criminal gangs have increased.
Juarez is located on the border of the United States.
