Renault Nissan Mitsubishi, how the historic alliance is changing: the models to come

The Renault Group and Nissan have completed lengthy negotiations to reorganize and rebalance their alliance. After months of discussions, an “important milestone” has been reached in redefining the partnership (to which Mitsubishi has also belonged since 2016) and, in particular, the shareholder structure: the French, in fact, have agreed to reduce their stake in the Japanese company by up to 15%, the same percentage owned by Nissan in the Boulogne-Billancourt company. The aspect that interests European motorists most, apart from the improvement of the distribution network, is that the three companies are evaluating the possibility of jointly designing a charging infrastructure for electric cars at Groupe Renault dealers and Nissan. Nissan is buying a stake of up to 15% in Ampere, Renault’s electric car division.

Upcoming models

Numerous projects have been announced for non-European markets: a pickup for Latin America (continuation of the partnership of the Nissan Frontier/Renault Alaskan family), a new model produced in Mexico by Nissan but destined for the Renault Group; two electric city cars designed on the Cmf-Aev platform that could come from us and SUVs for India. In Europe, the Renault Group and Mitsubishi would leverage the technology platforms of Captur and Clio to develop two new models with the new ASX and Colt, developed on the Cmf-B platform. The future Nissan Micra (pictured) has been confirmed and will be developed on the Cmf-Bev platform and produced at the ElectriCity plant in France from 2026. The car will have the same architecture and production as the Renault 5, arriving in 2024.

The company car strategy

In 2026, Groupe Renault will launch FlexEVan commercial vehicles (new family of electric commercial vehicles). Finally, the Japanese company and the French group would consider the possibility of a takeover collaborate on the next generation of mid-sized electric vehicles (segment C).
