Three people were killed in a shooting at a grocery store in central Washington state. This was reported by the Reuters agency, citing police, that the suspect had fled and was considered dangerous.
Chief Matt Murray told reporters that police were called to the Circle K store in Yakima around 4:30 am (12:30 AM ET) local time, where they found three dead. Two victims were shot inside the store and a third outside, suggesting it was an act of random violence, according to authorities.
“It seems like a random situation. There was no obvious conflict between the parties,” he said. “The man just came in and started shooting,” he added.
After opening fire inside the shop, the suspect ran across the street, shooting at the vehicle and forcing the driver to sit in the passenger seat. Police said the suspect then stole the vehicle and fled. But he did not release information about what happened to the driver of the stolen car.
According to the police, the cause of the crime is currently unknown. He thinks the suspect is dangerous to society. Police posted a photo of the man on social media wearing all-black clothing, including a hat, hoodie and jeans, and white Nike shoes.
In recent days, the US has experienced multiple mass shootings:
On Monday (Tuesday morning CET) local time, seven people were killed in two shootings near San Francisco, California. Local police said the possible perpetrator had been arrested, according to the AP agency.
Murray said police later identified the suspect as Jarid Haddock, 21, from Yakima, who was driving away from the scene on Highway 24 towards the suburb of Moxee. Police blocked several roads in search of the man.
Officers also drove to a house across from the warehouse on the outskirts of Yakima, about 145 miles (225 kilometers) southeast of Seattle. Court records listed a house in the area as Haddock’s previously known address. The police have already spoken to Haddock. In 2020, she arrested him after he was seen in a stolen car from a woman who left him running.
Yakima is a city of approximately 97,000 inhabitants located in the valley of the same name, known as an agricultural region famous for its apple growing and winemaking.
Over the past few days, the United States has been horrified by repeated mass shootings in California that have claimed the lives of at least 19 people. Worst of all, a gunman killed 11 people in the Lunar New Year ballroom in Monterey Park on Sunday, and another gunman killed seven in two linked incidents near San Francisco on Monday. One person was killed and eight others injured in a shooting at a gas station in the city of Oakland on Tuesday.
