In the “Strong firefighter” competition held in Jelgava on Friday, Artūrs Rožkovs, resident of Jelgava, commander of Dobele division became the strongest firefighter of 2023 in Latvia, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) reported.
On the other hand, the team of the Lithuanian Fire and Rescue Department won the team evaluation.
Among the participants representing Latvia, Richards Jurgensons from Jelgava region showed the second best result, while Tomas Jaunzems from 7th district of Riga regional administration came in third.
In the team competition, there was a fierce battle for the first place between two teams from the Lithuanian Fire and Rescue Department, while the third place was won by the Jelgava sub-team of the State Fire and Rescue Service.
Firefighters from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Germany took part in the competition: 60 participants in the individual competition and 13 rescuers in the team competition.
The distance of the “Strong Firefighter” competition is based on a popular sport in Europe and the USA that tests firefighters’ professional skills and physical fitness. The distance consists of five stages – climbing the tower carrying a bundle of hoses, winding a reel of hose on the tower’s top platform, testing strength by hammering the rail, pulling a water-filled hose, and bringing a dummy that nearly weighs in. 90 kilos to the finish line. The entire distance is covered with the firefighter’s special protective clothing, and in individual competitions, the participants breathe with the help of a breathing apparatus. Thus, the conditions in which firefighters and rescuers have to work in a fire are simulated as closely as possible.
