In a speech at the annual Kiev Security Forum on May 26, retired General David Petraeus, the former commander of the US Central Command, expressed his confidence in the success of the Ukrainian counteroffensive.

“I believe that the Ukrainian troops will be successful. It is clear that the Ukrainian soldiers can ensure the effectiveness of the combined arms operation,” said the general, who was also the director of the Central Intelligence Agency at one time.

He added that the success of the Ukrainian counteroffensive will largely depend on the state of the Russian army.

“They’ve been at war for 14-15 months, they’ve suffered huge losses, they haven’t had a normal opportunity to re-equip, but it’s impossible to have a united, disciplined military force this way,” Petraeus said. .

The general said that the success of the Ukrainian army on the battlefield will depend on further assistance to Ukraine, as well as possible NATO membership.
