Latvia’s ambassador to Ukraine confirmed to TV3 News that a Latvian fighter was killed in a Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine.
At the same time, the embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs request that information based on unofficial data not be disseminated until the family of the war dead decides whether to release the details of the tragedy.
“We have information that a Latvian volunteer soldier was killed at the front, and this happened on the night from Saturday to Sunday. We are in contact with the Ukrainian military authorities, we are clarifying the details and have to wait for official confirmation of the fact of death. Consular assistance is provided directly and individually by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , so information about the incident – about the death of a Latvian citizen – is given to relatives, not to third parties, and it is the relatives who will decide how widespread the information will then be made public,” says the ambassador. Ilgvars Kliava.
Volunteer Latvian soldier Krists Ancāns confirmed in a conversation with TV3 that this was the same situation in which an Estonian citizen also died; The two were in the same house, on the same team.
