Lithuanian President Gitans Nausėda, who had a bilateral meeting with Rites in Vilnius on Tuesday, announced that Lithuania supports the candidacy of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rites for the post of NATO Secretary General.

At the joint press conference held after the meeting, Nausėda said, “Lithuania supports the candidacy of Mr. Markas Rites for the post of Secretary General of NATO.” said.

The Lithuanian president expressed confidence that the Dutch prime minister is a suitable candidate to replace Jens Stoltenberg at the head of the alliance.

Nauseda said that he had known Riti for several years and that the Dutch Prime Minister was one of the politicians who realized very early the threat posed by Russia, changed his views on Russia and understood the threat to the eastern flank of NATO.

“It is very important at this stage that we have a person who is aware that the Russian threat is long-term, that the Russian threat is not only military, but also manifests itself in various aspects of disinformation, cybersecurity, even organized and instrumentalized immigration,” the president said.

Current NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg’s successor is expected to be announced before the alliance’s summit in Washington in July.

Under NATO rules, no decision will be approved until consensus is reached on one of the candidates.

Currently, Great Britain, Germany and the USA have announced their support for Rit. Hungary announced that it would not support Riti due to her criticism of Budapest.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas recently announced that Estonia will not oppose Rites’ candidacy for NATO Secretary General and is also ready to support the candidacy of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

On the other hand, Estonian Foreign Minister Marguss Cahkna announced on Tuesday that Estonia is ready to support Rite’s candidacy. He pointed out that Rite’s belief corresponds to the principles formulated by Estonia that will guarantee NATO’s ability to confront all threats and challenges.
